More Than I Imagined: What a Black Man Discovered about the White Mother He Never Knew, a memoir by CNN’s John Blake has won five book awards since its release in May, 2023. The book, published by Convergent, tells the story of his quest to reconcile with his white mother and the family he’d never met—and how faith brought them all together.

Nautilus Awards gold medal in the memoir and personal journey category
2024 Georgia Author of the Year award in the memoir category
Illumination Awards first-place gold medal in the biography/memoir category
Christopher Awards in the Books for Adults category
Nonfiction Book Award Gold Winner
Blake covered many of the biggest stories about race in America before realizing that “facts don’t change people, relationships do.” He only discovered this after experiencing what he calls “radical integration.” It was the only way forward for him and his family—and he believes it’s the only way forward for America as a multiracial democracy.
John Blake is an award-winning CNN journalist. Previously, he was a reporter for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He has been honored by the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Academy of Religion, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Religion Communicators Council. A recipient of the GLAAD Media Award, he has spoken at high schools, colleges, and symposiums, and in documentaries on race, religion, and politics.
